Breastfed Babies Normally Don’t Show Signs Of Acid Reflux

March 16, 2009 · Filed Under Breastfeeding

I went to visit a friend of mine whom just had a precious baby girl.  For whatever reason she decided not to breastfeed, and her daughter has been diagnosed with GERD better known as Acid Reflux.

I had the opportunity to feed her with the bottle formula, and a minute later when she had finished the bottle, the formula was coming back up.

Her mom says her pediatrician has prescribed her Prolisec? I said for a baby! Anyway, the mom said the medicines makes it even worse.

I just wish she would have chosen to breastfeed.  The stress of not knowing if your baby is getting enough to eat because after every feeding, it is coming back up is worrisome.

Breastfed babies does not have this severe problems of vomiting their milk back up.  Spit ups in small amounts is normal in breastfed babies as well as bottle fed babies.

For whatever, reason there is a tremendous increase in newborn babies with this problem.

I believe the manufactured formulas have to many foreign substances the human body cannot digest because it is not natural and that is the baby’s body way of saying, THIS SHOULD NOT BE IN MY SYSTEM.

While breastfed babies may be less likely to develop GERD, they are not immune from it. My second son had reflux. It was a miserable experience for all of us. I breastfed him through it, but he had to endure about nine months of mild to severe discomfort before his gut matured enough to stop the reflux.

I continued to breastfeed him until he was 2 & 1/2. It was such a delightful surprise to watch his cheerful, sunny personality emerge once he was past the pain. He’s about to turn 5 and continues to be a sweet, cheerful kid. We weren’t sure what we were in for with him after he spent almost a year screaming (or on the brink of screaming) in pain.

As a lactation counselor myself, I try very hard not to assume that breastfeeding would be a panacea for every family. I’ve known plenty of seemingly healthy children who were formula fed and a fair number of breastfed children with recurrent ear infections (for example). Obviously we don’t know how much *more* healthy the FF kids would be (nor how their health will hold up down the line) nor do we know how much more sick the BF kids would have been had their mothers formula fed.

It’s inappropriate to assume that breastfeeding guarantees immunity from any illness for every child.
